Big Box Enterprise Architect

        posted by , May 02, 2011

The Big Box Enterprise Architect comes in, draws four boxes and tells you that's your architecture.

Problem

Enterprise Architecture is a high level planning activity. However, it needs to be both business and technology relevant.

As Einstein said: Make everything as simple as possible, but not simpler.

Big Box Enterprise Architects violate the second part of this maxim.

Motivation

Big Box EAs see themselves as thought leaders and visionaries. Their aim is to inspire people.

The problem is that their is much more to enterprise architecture than providing inspiration. A desk calendar can provide inspiration — EA is a business value driven profession.

The Big Box EA is essentially in the wrong career — they should be motivational speakers.

Related Anti-patterns

The big box EA is similar to a Ivory Tower Architect and the opposite of a Sinking Architect.
