Gap Analysis Template

IT Gap Analysis is driven by business strategy and goals. It's also driven by business pain points with the current architecture and the health of IT.

To look at it another way a gap is either:

an opportunity to make more money

an opportunity to save money

a way to reduce risks

a regulatory requirement


The following template can be used to document IT gaps.

1. Issues with Business Functionality

1.1 Current Business Pain Points
What functionality is currently broken? Where have workarounds and tactical fixes been applied?

1.2 Business Growth
Does capacity need to be expanded to meet projected business volumes? Are additional capabilities required to meet business goals?

1.3 Strategy
What capabilities are required to build competitive advantage and support business strategy?

1.4 Competitive Risks
A competitive risk assessment as it applies to IT functionality.

1.5 Reputational Risks
Identify reputational risks. What business and IT enhancements are required to mitigate reputational risks?

1.6 Regulatory Driven Change
Current and future regulatory requirements and their impact to IT.

2. Issues with Technology Functionality

Areas where IT driven change is necessary.

2.1 User Satisfaction
What are the most common / significant user pain points with IT?

2.1 Non-functional Requirements
What systems and components have failed to meet current and future non-functional requirements?

2.2 Supportability
Are systems and technologies supportable? Have systems or technologies reached end of life?

2.3 Extensibility
Are technologies extensible enough to meet future business volumes and requirements?

2.4 SLA
Can IT meet current and future SLAs? What are the penalties, risks and business impacts?

2.5 Costs and Efficiency
Where is IT wasting money? Are there opportunities for automation?

2.6 Security
An assessment of security threats and vulnerabilities.

2.7 IT Risks
An IT risk management assessment of IT gaps.

3. Planned Enhancements

A list of current and future projects that have been identified mapped to the gaps they address.
