How to Squeeze Value from EA Principles

        posted by , July 13, 2011

So you defined a set of EA principles — so now what do you do with them?

There are four steps to squeezing value from EA principles:

1. Principle Acceptance

Principles are meaningless without enterprise-wide acceptance. You need to get buy in from the powers that be.

2. Marketing

Sell the principles to anyone who will listen. In particular you want to target CxOs. The goal here is to have the CxOs referring to principles in discussions amongst themselves.

3. IT Governance

If you have a architectural project review process (as part of IT Governance) — base your recommendations and actions items on principles.

Principles help to guarantee that the project review process is fair and transparent.

4. Metrics

Principles are an excellent basis for IT metrics. A few examples:

The metrics in the dashboard (above) were all generated by evaluating projects and systems against a set of EA principles.
