Zombie Armies of The Digital Frontier

        posted by , June 08, 2013

A botnet is a number of computers that are controlled by an attacker (usually without the owner of the computers knowing it).

These compromised devices form a network that can be controlled remotely like robots.

Definition: Botnet

A botnet is an interconnected network of infrastructure that has been taken over by an attacker.

So What?

Botnets may grow to include a large number of computers. They are typically used to send spam, launch DDoS attacks and generally cause trouble.

They are centrally controlled by a zombie master who has complete control of each machine in the botnet.

At any one time there are millions of active botnet computers connected to the internet. This represents a threat to any target the zombie masters choose to hit with attacks (e.g. DDoS).

Botnet attacks come from a wide variety of IPs and can be difficult to defend against.

Basic security tools such as virus scanners can help to prevent the formation of botnets.
