What's a ERP system?

posted by Anna Mar, Simplicable, January 03, 2012

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) are large systems that solve a wide range of business problems. They often include sales, supply chain, finance, customer relationship management, human resources and manufacturing capabilities.

Enterprise Resource Planning

ERP systems have such broad functionality that organizations that implement them can often retire 100s of older systems. This can save organizations a great deal of money.

Another major benefit of ERP is that it allows most (or all) of your organization's data to be put into one big database. Over the long term, this can eliminate data integration challenges. A large cohesive data repository can also drive reporting and analytics. Most ERP systems have powerful reporting and analytics tools.

Industry Specific ERP Functionality

Large ERP systems such as SAP and Oracle offer industry specific functionality.

ERP Customization

Many organizations customize ERP applications for their business. Many ERP systems offer generic tools such as workflow that allow your organization to implement business processes.

ERP Complexity

ERP systems tend to be expensive and complex. ERP implementation projects can cost large organizations 100s of millions of dollars. Large ERP projects have a high risk of failure.
