Zachman on Change Management

        posted by , October 16, 2010

Some excellent insight on importance of architecture to change management from enterprise architecture pioneer John Zachman (video below). Key points:

Enterprise's are the most complex objects known to mankind.

Architecture is the baseline for change management. If you don't have a well documented architecture for a complex object you only have three choices:

1. Change it by trial and error

Chances are it will fall apart — but you can try your luck.

2. Research and reverse engineer the architecture

It's possible to reverse engineer to get back to the architecture. However, it's expensive and time consuming.

3. Tear it down

Throw out the object and start again.
