What is a Heat Map?

A heat map is the use of color temperature to depict information. People commonly perceive red, orange and yellow as hot and intense. Colors such as green and blue are perceived as cool. Such perceptions are cross-cultural as they are rooted in natural elements such as fire, sunlight, sky, water and vegetation.
Heat maps can depict any information by creating an intensity scale whereby the greatest expected values are depicted as red followed by orange, yellow, green and blue. In some cases, purple is used to depict greater intensity than red. Generally speaking, heat maps allow people to understand an image quickly and may have an emotional impact. For example, depicting risks in red may create a sense of threat and urgency.
