What is Ambient Light?

 , updated on
Ambient light is light that is diffused equally throughout an environment. It is created by rays of light that are traveling in random directions as opposed to in a similar directions. It tends to feel calm and cool as opposed to a direct light such as a spotlight that may feel intense and hot.

Example

A regular light bulb provides light that has directional characteristics. It will light areas closest to it far more than distant areas and may cast shadows. If you put a light shade around the bulb, light bounces off the shade and becomes more ambient. If you replace the single light bulb with 100 small lights with shades and position them equally throughout an environment, the light will become completely ambient with no clear direction.
