What is an Authentication Code?

 , updated on
An authentication code is an identifier that is used to verify identity or validate the authenticity of data such as messages. They are often hashcodes that are designed to be infeasible to guess.

Example

It is common to authenticate an entity by asking them to decrypt a message encrypted with the public key found in their digital certificate. The message typically includes a authentication code. If the entity sends back the correct authentication code, you know that they are in possession of the private key corresponding to the public key in the digital certificate.
