What is a Butterfly Roof?

 , updated on
A butterfly roof is an inversion of a traditional roof with two sections of roof that slope downwards to meet near the middle of a building. This is considered a modern form that first appeared in the 1930s.
A potential advantage of a butterfly roof is that it automatically causes water to runoff from two points at the middle of the roof, front and back. This removes the need for gutters. It makes the roof less visible from the ground to conceal equipment such as solar panels.
Butterfly roofs also make for a unique interior space. It is common to place clerestory windows in the triangular shapes in the walls that are cut by the roof.
