Prototypes: Evolutionary vs Throwaway

 , updated on
An evolutionary prototype is a robust prototype that is constantly refined to represent a product change, future product or state-of-the-art demonstration. They tend to be an expensive investment that are common in domains such as the automotive industry that require products to be extremely refined before they hit the market.
A throwaway prototype is a cheap, fast prototype that is designed to model an idea or feature. They are commonly used in early phases of design when a large number of ideas are still being considered. Throwaway prototypes may also be used in late stage design in industries in which products are launched at a low state of refinement.
