Mass communication is the process of producing and distributing messages to a large audience. The following are common examples.

Journalism

The production and communication of news to large audiences via mediums such as television, newspapers and internet.

Entertainment

The production and distribution of television, films and other entertainment such as videos. These involve artistic, creative, technical and business roles such that contributors to these works often have extremely diverse talents.

Sports

Sports can be a hobby or part of an education. A sports team or league can also be a form of media organization when they reach a large audience. For example, a professional sports team that engages in public relations, advertising and broadcasting agreements.

Events

The production of live events that are communicated to a broad audience such as a concert that is broadcast by internet, radio or television.

Music

As with entertainment, music is a form of communication such that music production and distribution is a type of mass communication if it has potential to reach a large audience.

Publishing

The publishing of books, ebooks, magazines and newspapers.

Advertising

The planning, creation, communication and measurement of commercial messages to large audiences.

Marketing

Beyond advertising, other elements of marketing such as promotion and branding are types of mass communication. For example, designing the visual symbols of a brand.

Media

Static media such as websites, photographs and videos. For example, a well known photographer who shares their commercial or artistic images through a variety of media channels.

Interactive Media

Media that includes dynamic functionality. For example, a social media app that allows you to both create and view content.

Video Games

A game that takes place in a virtual world or a mixed reality. As with the real world, these virtual worlds may include communications such as entertainment, music and advertising.

Social Media

Platforms that allow anyone to share content, media and information with the public.

Broadcasting

Broadcasting is any medium that originates with a single point and reaches a large audience. For example, a radio or television station.

Public Relations

The process of managing the communications between an organization and its employees, customers, partners, regulators, investors and the public in general.

Campaigning

Communications designed to influence the outcome of an election or political opinions.
