Urban Design: Placemaking vs Experts

Placemaking is a term for the design of public spaces in close consultation with the residents of a city or neighborhood. It tends to result in spaces that have popular features for recreation, hobbies, socializing and personal reflection.
Many cities have had painful experiences after designing public spaces with committees of experts such as architects, artists and sociologists. For example, concrete public squares filled with abstract art may have academic appeal but typically go unused and fall into disrepair, becoming a liability to a city as opposed to an asset. As such, it is increasingly common for cities to turn over design choices to neighborhoods working with city designers.
