What is a Play Street?

 , updated on
Time misspent in youth is sometimes all the freedom one ever has.
~ Anita Brookner
A play street is a street that is closed to traffic either permanently or during certain hours so that it can be used as a play area. Most dense cities that lack neighborhood green spaces have a history and culture of children playing games in the street such as street football, hopscotch, skipping, marbles and street hockey. In many cases, children have no other neighborhood spot to play outside.
It is historically common for children to play in dangerous areas with traffic and to be subject to prosecution for breaking local ordinances. Play streets are a recognition that children need a safe outdoor area to play. They may be secured with features such as anchored vehicle barriers, signage that explicitly states the right to play in the area during certain hours and natural surveillance techniques.
