12 Examples of Project Milestones

 , updated on
Milestones are markers of project progress that are used in project planning, scheduling, communication and reporting. They mark significant starts and completions with a single date as opposed to a date range. Milestones are typically represented as a task of zero duration that may have dependencies. They are visualized with a diamond shape. The following are common examples of milestones.

Phases

The start and end of work phases such as proof of concept, design, procurement, construction, development, testing and launch. Phases are selected to be meaningful to progress and stakeholder communications. For example, a milestone such as "foundation completed" is more meaningful to stakeholders than "construction phase 1A."

Communication

Completion of a meeting such as a project kickoff event.

Decisions

Decisions such as selection of a vendor.

Planning

Completion and approval of a plan.

Design

Completion and review of a design.

Resources

Deployment of resources such as a development team.

Processes

Commencement or completion of processes. For example, "testing start."

Deliverables

Delivery of work to the client. Milestones often have commercial implications such as triggering a payment to a vendor.

Integration

Getting things connected and working together.

Environments

Building environments such as a lab, system or application. For example, "development build complete."

Training

Training activities such as knowledge transfer to an operations team.

Objectives & Goals

The completion of objectives and goals. For example, "information security review complete" or "production launch."
