The Difference

Skills apply to specific and well defined activities such as solving a mathematical problem.
Abilities apply to all human capacities to interpret, imagine, interact, create and solve.

Relationship

A skill is a type of ability.

Example

A proficient artist develops a technical skill to represent what they see with a pencil or brush.
A great artist develops a talent over the course of a unique life. They have the ability to invoke people's imagination and passions with their works.
The proficient artist possesses a skill and the great artist possess abilities that might be described as talent or genius.
