What is Urban Reforestation? John Spacey, updated on
Many cities are located at sites that were once forests. Urban reforestation is an effort to return an area closer to its original state by planting large numbers of trees.Trees can be planted in parks, on rooftops and along streets. Closing roads to vehicular traffic is one approach to creating space for trees. In some cases, cities mandate trees in parking lots and other developments such as buildings beyond a certain size. Sites such as brownfields or closed highways may provide an opportunity to develop reasonably large urban forests.Large numbers of trees and forests moderate urban heat islands, improve air quality, add to quality of life and build resilience. Land values tend to go up with proximity to an urban park, forest or tree lined street.
