4 Types of Risk Sharing

 , updated on
Risk sharing is the practice of distributing risks amongst organizations, departments, teams or individuals. This has several common flavors:

1. Insurance

Insurance products designed to pool risks amongst clients.

2. Self Insurance

The pooling of risks within an organization to reduce the maximum impact to any one team or department.

3. Mitigation

Risk sharing may provide opportunities for an organization to mitigate risks. For example, resource risks shared between multiple teams may provide opportunities to share resources and reduce risk.

4. Commitment

Risk sharing may be used as a strategy to improve the commitment of stakeholders to a project. For example, if operations and marketing share the risks of a project it may be more likely to succeed versus a situation whereby operations bears all risk.
