What is an Automated Industrial Complex?

An automated industrial complex is a factory that operates lights out without need for human workers. Such facilities are mostly theoretical as current factories may run entire shifts without workers but require human labor for tasks such as maintenance.
In general, factories become increasingly automated with time. Full automation has theoretical advantages in areas such as space exploration. For example, automated self replicating factories are one theoretical way to terraform a planet or build space stations on remove and inhospitable worlds.
