A false dichotomy is a type of fallacy that presents two options as being opposed that aren't necessarily opposites. It is associated with assumptions that tradeoffs must be made when in fact win-win scenarios exist. The following have been suggested as false dichotomies:
Privacy vs SecurityThe idea that privacy must be sacrificed to make the job of security forces easier.Freedom vs SecurityThe idea that freedoms such as the ability to move freely is the opposite of security.Freedom vs SafetyThe assertion that there is a fundamental tradeoff between exercising freedom and remaining safe. Ignores the gains and resilience that can be built up with risk taking that can make you antifragile.
Us vs ThemThe tendency for politicians and other group leaders to present problems as being adversarial and win-lose that could just as easily be win-win. You're either with us, or against usThe accusation that by not supporting a particular approach that you are against an entire ideology, society or system.
