Most businesses began to invest in information technology in the 1960s and 70s.

By the mid 1980s — many of these organizations had complex systems and integrations. This complexity drove the need for enterprise architecture.

The 1987 paper A Framework for Information Systems Architecture by John Zachman is usually credited as the first publication to discuss enterprise architecture.

The paper begins with the words:

The subject of information systems architecture is beginning to receive considerable attention.

It's clear that enterprise architecture was a hot topic by 1987.
