ITIL V3 CMDB At 50000 Feet
posted by Anna Mar, February 12, 2011Configuration Management Database (CMDB) is a concept that was introduced by ITIL v2. A CMDB manages anything that is configurable in an information system.
Configuration Items
A CMDB manages information about Configuration Items (CIs) and relationships between CIs.ITIL defines a configuration item as "any Component that needs to be managed in order to deliver an IT Service". In other words, anything that is configurable in your ICT infrastructure. This includes high level things such as locations and low level things such as server ports.
Auto Discovery
A key success factor for CMDB is the ability to automatically detect changes to configuration items. In other words, CMDB should track changes to your ICT infrastructure as they happen.CMDB and ITIL Processes
CMDB supports much more than the configuration management process.CMDB Anti-pattern
ITIL v2 made the mistake of defining CMDB as "a database" of Configuration Items (CIs). So everyone went out and built monolithic databases containing the configuration of their servers, network equipment, software etc... Such implementations were unresponsive to change, difficult to maintain and generally problematic.ITIL v3 redefines the CMDB and introduces new concepts that discourage this anti-pattern.
