9 Interview Strategies That Work

It's critical to have a strategy for every job interview.
You may not be interested in strategy, but strategy is interested in you.
~ Leon Trotsky Choose a strategy that you're confident you can execute smoothly. The following strategies may help.
1. Lead from your strengthsThink about your strengths relative to the position. Identify 3 or 4 themes you want to communicate in the interview. Use your answers to continually communication your top themes.
2. Be candidYears ago I was involved in setting up a new offshore development center. I conducted technical interviews of hundreds of candidates within a 6 month period.
When you interview people day in and day out — a little candor is refreshing. It tends to be the best candidates that feel comfortable with candor.
3. Be interestedResearch the company. Think through the role. Let your curiosity run wild in the interview.
When you're genuinely interested in the position it will show. It's no fun to hire someone who's not excited about the role.
4. Tell storiesIt's your job to keep the interviewers awake. Answer questions with engaging stories and they'll be hooked.
This takes some practice. Think about the greatest successes in your career and wrap them in narrative. Practice on a friend.
5. Walk the lineThere's a fine line between exaggerating and looking at your career in a positive light. You want be positive without sounding phony.
6. Meet an old friendPeople tend to like people who like them. Go into the interview as if you're meeting an old friend. If you can actually imagine that the interviewers are old friends it will help. This technique will also relax you.
7. Be yourselfA little personality makes you more likable and memorable.
8. Pain focusSeek to understand the problems the employer wants the ideal candidate to solve. With your answers, demonstrate your ability to solve the right problems.
9. Work hardDo your research into the company. Work with as many sample interview questions as you can find.
