IT Manager Job Description

There are many flavours of IT manager — some manage teams of project managers. Others manage teams of developers and technical SMEs. Still others, manage support staff. In many cases, IT managers are responsible for integrated teams of architects, project managers, business analysts, development and support staff.

The following sample job description can be used as a menu of options to build a IT Manager job description. It can be tailored to the business and technical requirements of the position.

Business Alignment

Build relationships with business management.

Work with business sponsors to set annual priorities.

Support business strategic planning with IT technology and architecture consulting.

Understand and interpret business strategy.

Ensure alignment of business strategy and goals with IT strategy.

Maintain in-depth knowledge of business models, capabilities and competitive environments.


IT Projects

Manage large and complex IT programs and projects.

Sponsor programs and projects that achieve business goals in collaboration with senior management and business stakeholders.

Build relationships with executive project sponsors and senior technology leadership.

Direct and manage IT projects from conceptualization to implementation.

Provide consulting to projects to estimate work packages and identify architectural approaches.

Provide consulting to projects to identify project, architecture and security risks.

Develop requests for proposal.

Monitor project interdependencies and resolve issues and conflicts.

Coordinate delivery of work from multiple onshore and offshore suppliers.

Deliver projects on-time and on-budget.

Ensure that all deliverables are high quality and meet business functional and non-functional requirements.

Ensure that all deliverables follow IT standards and best practices.


IT Service Management

Manage the deployment, monitoring, maintenance, development, upgrade, and support of all IT systems.

Oversee configuration management, incident and problem management, backups, archiving and disaster recovery.

Ensure that applications meet or exceed SLA targets for availability and MTTR.

Oversee help desk processes and ensure that internal and external clients receive outstanding service.

Manage implementation of ITIL V3 service management processes.

Manage all processes in the service management lifecycle including strategy, design, transition, operations and continual service improvement.


Team Management

Manage a team of onshore/offshore architects, project managers, business analysts, developers, SMEs and support staff.

Coach and mentor team members to help them to grow their careers.

Evaluate and authorize work requests and review cost estimates.

Assign work and motivate team members.

Oversee staff performance management.

Manage IT vendors.

Partner with procurement to negotiate and manage vendor contracts.

Act as the point person for the team.

Communicate status reports, architectural overviews and IT strategy to executive management and business.

Foster a culture of candid collaboration.

Develop and manage internal and external strategic partnerships.

Initiate and deliver efficiency improvements and innovation that drives business revenue.

Produce regular team status reports for executive management including key milestones and performance indicators.


IT Strategy & Architecture

Maintain in-depth knowledge of the organization's technology stack.

Maintain in-depth knowledge of the information technology industry including best practices and emerging technologies.

Build relationships with enterprise architecture and governance teams.

Adhere to architectural governance processes and obtain requisite approvals for all projects.

Contribute to IT strategy planning.

Ensure that current state architectural blueprints are up-to-date.


IT Financial Management

Prepare, monitor and update CAPEX and OPEX budgets and all related financial accounting.

Support audit and regulatory financial reporting.

Submit annual budget requests.

Assist the CFO office, IT management and procurement with financial planning and forecasting.
