Carbon materials are useful substances that are composed completely or partially of the element carbon. This includes minerals such as diamonds, organic materials such as wood, synthetic materials such as plastics and advanced materials such as carbon fiber. Generally speaking, carbon is known as a strong and hard material due to its strong carbon-to-carbon bonds. It also has valuable material properties. For example, carbon has the highest melting point of the elements. The following are common carbon materials.
Activated carbon | Bamboo | Bioplastic | Carbon black | Carbon fiber | Carbon fiber reinforced polymers | Carbon foams | Carbon nanofibers | Carbon nanorods | Carbon nanotubes | Carbon quantum dots | Carbon reinforced concrete | Carbon steel | Carbonate minerals such as magnesite | Charcoal | Diamond | Food | Graphene | Graphite | Leather | Limestone | Paper | Plastics | Resin | Rubber | Silicon carbide | Wood |
The carbon in steel is a low percentage, often below 1%.As life on Earth is carbon based, natural organic materials are also generally carbon based.Materials manufactured with petrochemicals are generally carbon based. Many of the strongest known advanced materials are carbon based. There are large number of composite materials that contain carbon such as carbon reinforced plastic.Next: Diamonds
