What is a Lightwell?

 , updated on
A lightwell is an open space within the volume of a building that is designed to provide light and ventilation to interior spaces. Traditionally, lightwells are open to the sky without a roof with windows lining the walls facing the lightwell. These windows provide a degree of airflow and light to the deep interiors of large buildings. The open space provided by a light well may also be usable as a small outdoor area or garden.

Light Well vs Skylight

It is common for modern structures with a glass roof to be referred to as a lightwell. These differ from a skylight in that they cut an open space through a building from the roof to the ground.
