Literature is a term of respect for fictional works that have artistic merit. This implies a work that has achieved some degree of institutional interest such as a book that is discussed in schools. Literature also implies that a work isn't overly commercial such that its writing isn't specifically designed for popular appeal. The most direct opposites of literature are genre fiction, popular fiction and nonfiction. It is also common to simply use the term fiction or novel where you feel that a book isn't true literature. Alternatively, genres of fiction may be used to imply that a work isn't literature, particularly for genres that don't get much institutional recognition such as romance.
