Word OriginGreige is often assumed to be a portmanteau of grey + beige. However, greige is an English word that means "neither bleached nor dyed." This originates with the French grège meaning "raw silk." Raw silk has a light brownish grey color that is similar to greige. As such, this may be the true origin of the word.
