Tea colors are named colors established by tradition that are based on the color of fresh tea leaves, processed tea leaves, brewed tea and prepared tea beverages. Tea comes from a single species of evergreen shrub known as camellia sinensis. Tea leaves are naturally a medium or dark green. Green tea is left in this state unwilted and unoxidized. Brown and black colors of tea are produced by the breakdown of cholorophyll and release of phenols and polyphenols known as tannins. Teas come in hundreds of varieties that mostly have different colors. Likewise, brewing methods and ingredients such as milk produce unique colors of black, brown, green, red and yellow. The following are common tea colors.
NotesThe Japanese language has dozens of color names that are related to tea. In fact, the Japanese word for brown, chairo, can be translated "tea color." All of the color names above that end in "cha" are Japanese color names.
