Growth is the process of increasing or improving. Life is largely a process of growing, stabilizing and declining. This pattern can be seen in a large number of natural, human and technical processes. As such, the opposites of growth are mostly words that describe stability and decline or terms that simply describe making things smaller. The following are common antonyms of growth.
abate | austerity | become stale | breakdown | collapse | compress | consolidate | constrict | contract | crumble | cut | cutback | decay | decease | decline | decrease | degenerate | depression | descent | deterioration | diminish | disintegrate | downfall | downsizing | downturn | dwindle | fade | fail | fall | flatline | founder | languish | lessen | lower | minimize | nondevelopment | recede | recession | reduce | reduction | regression | retracement | retrenchment | reversion | settle | shrink | slip | slump | stabilize | stagnate | stand still | step backward | subside | wane | weaken | worsen |
