Social data is information collected from the public social media profiles, activities and posts of users. This is a type of personal data that can potentially be personally identifiable. In some cases, the users that post social data are anonymous or somewhat anonymous. The following are examples of social data.
Activities | Age | Attitudes | Brand Affinity | Clips | Complaints | Disability Status | Dislikes | Education Level / History | Gender | Likes | Location | Memberships | Name | Nationality | Opinions | Photos | Places / Events Visited | Political Views | Profession | Purchases | Religion | Reviews | Shared Links | Shared Media | Social Connections (e.g. professional connections) | Statements About Self (e.g. Personal Brand Statement) | Talents / Skills | Videos | Work History |
In many cases, users will not share all of the data items listed above publicly. Information known to the social media platform itself may be far greater than information posted publicly. In many cases, users freely post data such as opinions, attitudes and personally identifiable information to the public without full consideration of how this might be collected and used. Such data may be extremely persistent and durable once it is broadcast publicly on social media. Analysis of social data can be quite complex due to nuances of language and other issues such as bots and impersonation.
