Passive

A passive digital footprint is unintended by the user. For example, a shopper on an ecommerce site inadvertently provides the site information about their preferences and lifestyle by the products they browse.

Active

Information that an individual purposely shares with the public or network of contacts such as a blog post.

Personally Identifiable

Information that can be traced to your real name.

Anonymous

Information generated anonymously such as comments posted using a pseudonym as a name. Technologies such as VPN allow users to hide their IP from services.

User Input

Data that results from user input such as messages sent from a mobile device.

Sensor Data

Data created by sensors such as cameras and microphones in public places, private residences and mobile devices.
