They are a fundamental tool that underlies most information technology. Databases implement efficient data storage and retrieval, relational models, constraints, transactions, concurrency, database languages, APIs, security, migration tools, analysis tools, data management tools, backup, restore and other features that are useful for building, using and maintaining large collections of data.
