Extrinsic rewards are positive results of effort that are external to the self. These are primarily material and social rewards that involve either physical things or other people. This can be contrasted with intrinsic rewards that are contained entirely within the self. The following are common types of extrinsic rewards.Authority | Awards | Belonging | Comfort | Community | Connectedness | Control | Convenience | Entertainment | Experiences | Food | Friendship | Fun | Grades | Income | Influence | Love | Luxury | Material Things | Memberships | Points in a Game | Position | Power | Praise | Protection | Recognition | Respect | Safety | Scores | Security | Social Status | Wealth | Winning Competitive Battles | Working Conditions |
Some of the rewards above, such as experiences, can also be intrinsic.
NotesIt is a common myth that extrinsic rewards are tangible, meaning that they are something physical that can be touched. This is not always the case as elements such as social status are fully extrinsic but are intangible.|
