Traditional values are the beliefs that people traditionally hold about what is important in life or what constitutes admirable behavior. This varies by culture, perspective and tradition. However, there may be common threads in these values such as emphasis on duty and obligations to society, family and community. The following are illustrative examples of traditional values.
Family | Respect for elders | Honesty | Hard work | Self-reliance | Community | Religious faith | Morality | Patriotism | Charity | Generosity | Courage | Loyalty | Responsibility | Respect for authority | Civility | Humility | Gratitude | Forgiveness | Hospitality | Cooperation | Discipline | Modesty | Justice | Fairness | Tolerance | Duty and obligation | Self-control | Community service | Sacrifice | Marriage | Fidelity | Respect for parents | Preserving tradition | Frugality | Politeness | Stoicism | Austerity | Chivalry | Localism | Cleanliness | Personal honor |
Tolerance is commonly viewed as a modern value but is a long standing principle. For example, ethnic and religious tolerance was a central principle of the Habsburg monarchy that ruled large regions of Europe for much of the middle ages. Tolerance was also a central theme of the The European Enlightenment.Next: Tradition
