Matte color is a color that is dull or flat indicating a lack of shine and luster. This term mostly applies to paints, art supplies and consumer products to indicate a lack of a shiny finish. The term matte originates with photo processing where it traditionally indicates a low to no gloss finish. As a color term, matte indicates washed out colors that are both shaded with black and tinted with white to give them a greyish tone. The following are common examples of matte colors.

Etymology

The term matte likely originates with the old French mat meaning dull, beaten down or withered. The term mat dates to the 1640s with the term matte for photographs dating to the 1840s -- the earliest days of photography.
