Traditional things are elements of life that are sustained over many generations. These can change with time but the primary goal of a tradition is to create consistency and stability. Traditions also represent connection and continuity with the past whereby they give you things in common with older generations and a sense of participating in the ongoing process of history.

CultureTraditional culture is any widespread practice of a social group that is sustained over multiple generations. This isn't the only type of culture as there are also many modern cultures such as pop culture or youth culture that coexist with traditional culture. In practice, many cultures are partially traditional and partially modern. For example, a nation where people still practice traditional performing arts but economic life has shifted towards modern practices.LifestylesA lifestyle is the way that people live their day to day life. This includes daily routines, social life, economic practices, food preparation and anything else that shapes how you live. Traditions are an important element of this for many communities, families and households as these provide stability and continuity in a world of rapid change.Traditional GoodsTraditional goods such as foods, materials, furnishings, housewares and crafts. Production of traditional goods is often a large and thriving part of the culture industry. For example, the production of authentic Japanese kimono where styles change only slowly but workmanship and materials remain traditional. These are remarkably expensive but there is little interest in cheaper modern substitutes because wearing the authentic traditional item is viewed as a rite of passage.Traditional FoodsPeople may decide that innovation is great in one area of their life but prefer stability in some other area. Food is one area where people commonly adopt traditional practices. This is often reinforced by the food industry that commonly offers artificial ingredients and other innovations that can be perceived as a step backward in quality.Traditional KnowledgeKnowledge domains that don't change as quickly as possible as with areas such as technology but that rather sustain something that is viewed as worthy into the future. Traditional knowledge is viewed as a foundation that gives a person deep ties to a culture and to history.Next read: Tradition
