5 Examples of N+1 Redundancy

N+1 redundancy is a technique for improving the reliability of infrastructure, facilities, systems and devices by providing an independent backup of components. The variable N refers to the number of operating components and "+1" refers to a backup. The following are illustrative examples.

Infrastructure

A data center has a primary network provider and a secondary provider as a backup (1+1).

Equipment

A factory has 10 industrial robots and one backup (10+1).

Facilities

A data center is designed to have redundant power generators, uninterruptible power supplies, cooling systems and network infrastructure.
