Customer service is any person-to-person exchange between a business and a customer. This is considered critical to competitive advantage and is typically measured by customer satisfaction. Successful customer service is often described as a process of adapting to the personality, needs and mood of each customer. In other words, customers are happiest to be treated as a unique individual with specific needs that change with time. Customers dislike being viewed as a commodity or problem. They also may resent being pushed through rigid processes and procedures. As such, automation and processes for customer service tend to be less important than a firm's service culture.
