Active Safety vs Passive Safety

 , updated on
Active safety is a design that avoids a risk. Passive safety is a design that minimizes losses when a risk occurs.
Both terms stem from safety engineering fields such as automobile safety. Active safety features of a car include things like collision avoidance systems and anti-lock brakes. Passive safety includes features such as air bags, seat belts and the physical structure of the vehicle that may be designed to absorb the forces of a crash without harming occupants or pedestrians.
