Political voice is influence and say in the direction of society such that an individual can at least have their viewpoint heard and considered. In a true democracy, everyone is meant to have a political voice. This voice is supposed to be equal but in the real world things such as media presence, relationships, wealth, social status and lack of adversity may be likely to increase your voice. The following are basic examples of political voice.
Democratic ProcessThe process of participating in a democracy that gives everyone in a society a voice in the sense that they have political rights such as a right to vote and run for elected office. This includes important voices such as journalism and whistleblowing that help to create political accountability.
Democratic RightsRights and freedoms that are required for a democracy to function. This includes freedoms such as freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, freedom of association and freedom of movement that are required for basic political processes such as debate, campaigning or activism. ActivismThe process of pushing for change outside of the regular political process. This is the difference between a political campaign and a political protest. Activism is an important tool for those outside of existing power structures that gives people a voice to push for social, political, environmental or economic change. Political DebateCommunicating and debating political ideas is a fundamental element of political voice. This includes everything from running for office and participating in official candidate debates to political conversations or arguments with friends and family. Media ParticipationMedia is a means to reach an audience with a message. Participating in media can give you more of a political voice. This includes creative media like fiction and song writing that can greatly influence society over time.Community EngagementGetting involved in your community tends to gives you more of a voice. This can include involvement in local politics, activism or volunteering to improve things where you live.Lifestyle ChoicesHow you live your life can have a social and political impact or can serve as a form of political expression. For example, choosing not to purchase a product or brand based on their social or environmental impact. This can also involve supporting businesses, institutions and ways of life that you see as positive.
