Risk is the potential for a negative outcome. Opportunity is the potential for a positive outcome and is often presented as the opposite of risk. This doesn't make complete sense as risk and opportunity are bound together. They are so intertwined that risk managers view them as two sides of the same coin using concepts such as positive risk and negative risk. The true opposites of risk are risk treatments, particularly avoidance and mitigation. For example, caution is a good opposite for risk because the cautious forgo both risk and opportunity. The following are possible opposites of risk.Assurance | Care | Caution | Certainty | Collateral | Conservative | Control | Conventional | Dependable | Established | Guaranteed | Guarded | Insurance | Known | Mediocrity | Opportunity | Predictable | Protection | Reliable | Risk Avoidance | Risk Mitigation | Risk Reduction | Risk-free | Safe | Safeguard | Sanctuary | Secure | Shelter | Stable | Status Quo | Surety | Trustworthy |
NotesThe term risk-free is suspect as everything is surrounded in risk. Some people strongly feel that opportunity is the opposite of risk.
