An action is anything that you do on purpose. This typically has some intention behind it. Actions can be contrasted with involuntary behavior such as reflexes or passive behavior such as inaction or undirected thinking. An action need not be physical. For example, making a decision or composing a strategy with your thoughts can be considered an action. This being said, overthinking can be perceived as inaction if you miss a window of opportunity to act in a tangible way. The following are common examples of actions.
Accept | Adapt | Administer | Advance | Advise | Agree | Answer | Anticipate | Argue | Assemble | Brave | Build | Calculate | Campaign | Celebrate | Challenge | Champion | Change | Chill | Clear | Code | Collaborate | Collect | Commit | Communicate | Compete | Complain | Complete | Compose | Concentrate | Conciliate | Construct | Contemplate | Control | Cooperate | Coordinate | Criticize | Cultivate | Dance | Debate | Decide | Defeat | Defend | Delineate | Deliver | Design | Develop | Direct | Discover | Draw | Drive | Earn | Endeavor | Endure | Engage | Engineer | Establish | Exercise | Experiment | Explore | Find | Fix | Forecast | Formulate | Frame | Generate | Give | Govern | Guide | Handle | Help | Implement | Improve | Improvise | Include | Influence | Initiate | Institute | Integrate | Invent | Investigate | Join | Laugh | Launch | Lead | Learn | Listen | Look | Maintain | Make | Manage | Master | Measure | Meet | Move | Negotiate | Nurture | Operate | Optimize | Organize | Originate | Overcome | Party | Perform | Pitch | Plan | Play | Practice | Present | Preserve | Press | Produce | Promote | Propose | Protect | Pursue | Push | Question | Quit | Raise | Recover | Redesign | Refine | Reflect | Reinforce | Relate | Remember | Reorganize | Repair | Represent | Research | Resist | Resolve | Review | Run | Secure | See | Sell | Shape | Shop | Sleep | Solve | Speak | Stand | Start | Steer | Stimulate | Struggle | Study | Teach | Test | Think | Try | Unify | Uphold | Use | Volunteer | Walk | Work | Write |
Generally speaking, action verbs that describe successes sound a little cliche as they are overused. For example "achieved 1.2 million in sales." These can be replaced with more specific verbs that describe your actions such as "closed 1.2 million in sales."In some cases, not doing something can be an action. For example, controlling a negative emotion as opposed to acting out in some inopportune way. Likewise, silence, listening or thinking are all seemingly passive states that can be actions.
