8 Types of Infrastructure Development

 , updated on
Infrastructure development is the construction of basic foundational services in order to stimulate economic growth and quality of life improvement. Most advanced economies have gone through periods of intensive infrastructure building that have improved the efficiency and competitiveness of regions. The following are common types of infrastructure development.

Transportation Infrastructure

Transportation facilities such as airports and systems such as rail networks. These play a major role in the quality of life and economic efficiency of nations, regions and cities.

Energy Infrastructure

The production and delivery of energy such as distributed solar panels with battery backup. Development of energy infrastructure often focuses on resilience and the environment whereby diverse sources of energy are used to ensure supply with a focus on sources with low environmental impact.

Water Infrastructure

Infrastructure for securing and distributing water resources. This includes water resource management, treatment and flood prevention.

Green Infrastructure

Green infrastructure is infrastructure that is literally green such as a green roof designed to insulate a structure, mitigate stormwater runoff and reduce urban heat island effects.

Digital Infrastructure

Digital infrastructure includes communication networks, computing facilities and widely used platforms, software and devices. It is also common for traditional infrastructure such as a hospital to rely on digital technologies.

Social Infrastructure

Public services that contribute to quality of life such as schools, hospitals, emergency services, community support, public space, libraries and cultural institutions.

Economic Infrastructure

Foundations for economic production, efficiency, transactions and investment. This includes financial infrastructure such as banks and markets. Generally speaking, all infrastructure contributes to economic efficiency.

City Infrastructure

Soft and hard infrastructure that contributes to the economy and quality of life of a city. This overlaps with all of the infrastructure areas above. It is most common for public infrastructure to be developed at the city level but it is also developed at the national and regional level.
