Royal yellow is a deep, dark, rich yellow color traditionally associated with the Emperor of China. It is also known as Chinese yellow and imperial yellow. Historically, it was common in many cultures for colors to be reserved for royalty and other high ranking social classes. During the Imperial Period of Chinese history yellow was reserved for the Emperor, although the colors worn by Emperors varied by dynasty. This meant that it was forbidden for anyone else to wear yellow. Imperial yellow was also historically worn by Imperial body guards. During the Qing Dynasty an imperial yellow jacket could be awarded by the Emperor to high-ranking officials for merit such as a military victory. This was regarded as the highest honour of the Qing Dynasty. The following are common types of royal yellow and a few similar colors.
