EtymologyThe word azure appeared in English to describe a color as early as 1374. The origin of the word relates to the semi-precious mineral lapis lazuli that has a vivid blue color. The word azure ultimately descends from the ancient Persian lazaward for lapis lazuli.
Notes* The Azure color name in html/css is a pale color that is close to white. This is an odd choice that relates to the origin of early web colors that were taken from a unix/linux standard known as X11 color names. These were chosen by computer scientists who didn't necessarily have a background in art, color theory or design.
