Communication

When you think about it, relationships are mostly a series of conversations. Conversational skills such as humor or telling engaging stories are likely to help you establish and build productive relationships.

Emotional Intelligence

Reading the emotion and drive behind what other people are saying as opposed to taking their words literally all the time. It is also important to be aware that other people are reading your emotions. For example, people will commonly react more to the tone of what you are saying as opposed to the actual content of your words.

Collaboration

Working well with others. This sounds like a profession thing but we also collaborate with people in our personal lives. For example, working with a friend to find something when you are lost on a road trip.

Trust Building

Showing others that you are on their side and that they can rely on you in certain ways. It is also important to place trust in others and to regularly show them how much you trust them.

Relationship Maintenance

The process of sustaining a relationship. This should be a joy whereby a healthy relationship gives to you as you nurture it. There may be difficult times where this doesn't feel true but overall relationships are there to build you up and make you connected to life and others.

Conflict Resolution

The opposite of love is indifference. That is to say that intensive negative emotions only emerge where you care about others or what they think. As such, our closest relationships can also generate our most difficult conflicts. Learning not to escalate these and to deal with them maturely despite surging emotions is the real key to sustaining relationships. What is built up over decades can suddenly fall apart and being ever vigilant to try to show respect in disagreement is a valuable virtue.

Networking

The ability to go out in the world, meet people and found new relationships that connect you to others. This is often achieved with memberships such as work, volunteering, events, school and so forth that push you into contact with others.

Summary

Relationship skills are remarkably similar across personal, professional and community relationships whereby they are mostly about getting to know others and deepening this connection over time to a structure that meets the needs of both sides.
