What is Active Silence?

Active silence is the skilled use of silence in communication. It includes basics of communication such as listening and pausing speech for dramatic effect. It can also be used as a complex social strategy such as an uncomfortable silence in negotiations in attempt to get the other side to make an offer first.
In many cases, people don't feel comfortable in silence. Amongst social animals, silence is often a sign of danger as a group will pause and listen when danger approaches. This may help to explain human behavior as silence can have a potent dramatic effect.
