Inspiration is a source of intense mental stimulation that can translate into productivity and creativity. The following are common sources of inspiration.

People

People model themselves on other people and are commonly inspired by acts of bravery, kindness, risk taking, exploration, creativity and discovery. In other cases, people are simply inspired by people who have high social status. It is possible to be inspired by famous people you've never met or people that you know very well such as a friend or relative.

Culture

Art

The unconstrained visual expression of talented artists.

Characters

Stories & Myths

Storytelling and traditional myth can create a sense of wonder, admiration or convey truisms that people find inspirational.

History

Events that actually occurred in the past such as the fact that your ancestors endured the challenges, hardships and indignities of history to make you possible.

Nature

The splendors of nature or periods of reflection in a natural environment.

Science

Science can inspire a sense of wonder with regards to the complexity, eloquence and possibilities uncovered by systematic and rational research of the universe.

Music

Music is pure inspiration that has a remarkable ability to influence emotion, ideas, creativity and energy.

Truisms

Truisms such as quotations, lyrics, figures of speech or traditional sayings. For example, "no pain, no gain" as an inspiration to overcome the difficulty of exercise, training and competition.

Religion & Spirituality

Religion and spirituality are commonly cited as a source of inspiration and resilience.

Philosophy

It is possible to draw inspiration from ideas in philosophy or the practice of a philosophy such as optimism.

Relationships

The bonds that you enjoy with others. For example, a family that inspires you to do the right thing in a range of difficult situations.

Personal Reflection

Moments of personal reflection. This can involve no thought at all such as a stillness of the mind.

Mastery

Effort can be its own inspiration. As you seek to master a profession, subject or interest you may find that work itself is your inspiration.

Slice of Life

It is very common for individuals to suddenly feel a sense of wonder in a particular moment. This can occur during any element of the human experience and doesn't require anything dramatic.

Notes

Naming a famous person with a stellar reputation as your source of inspiration is a bit of a cliche as this is what everyone tends to do. However, if you're just jumping through hoops such as a university application this is perhaps a safe path.
