Motivation: Intrinsic vs Extrinsic

 , updated on
Intrinsic motivation is doing something because you naturally want to do it. This is associated with activities that people find satisfying, interesting or internally rewarding. Extrinsic motivation is a doing something to achieve an external reward such as money, status or validation.
The two types of motivation often align. For example, many people intrinsically enjoy aspects of their career such as the opportunity to learn, socialize and create value. However, most of these same people would likely quit without a paycheck.
